APPRENTICE LINEMAN (1st-3rd year)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This is work leading to the acquisition of journeyman skills in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground power lines. Increasing levels of knowledge and experience are to be demonstrated by test results and working knowledge to obtain II year, III year and IV year Apprentice classifications. Reports to Line Superintendent, General Foreman and Crew Leaders. Accepts direction from journeymen positions. No supervision is exercised.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: An employee in this class is responsible for the performance of a variety of functions related to the construction and maintenance of an electrical distribution system. As the Apprentice Lineman is a progression towards Journeyman status, the tasks, knowledge, difficulty, and responsibility will increase as the training period progresses. These following duties are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive: the willingness to climb poles, work at moderate heights, work on energized lines, all methods of line construction (underground and overhead power lines), street lighting; tree trimming; material stocking; equipment operation; meter reading; map and staking sheet reading; inventory and material sheets; proper safety precautions and skill and care of tools and equipment. Will work in inclement weather conditions and on-call with a journeyman for after hour call-outs. Work effectively and courteously with the general public. Safety procedures will be adhered to at all times. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in line construction and maintenance work; ability and willingness to acquire skill in climbing poles and working at moderate heights and working with high and low voltages. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions. The willingness to study and take tests of approved Apprenticeship program. An employee in this classification must demonstrate improving skills and understanding in the construction of electric lines and fiber optics. Progress through the various classes will depend on the individual learning, test scores, and demonstration of these skills. Promotion will be based on the professional opinion of the crew leader, general foreman, superintendent and management. Must live within 50 miles from the intersection of Grand Avenue and 8th Street. Total travel time cannot exceed 60 minutes at posted driving speeds. All employees who live within 30 miles of Grand Avenue and 8th Street may drive a Public Works vehicle to their home when on call or stand by.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED. Course work in the principles of electricity and/or Line school experience desirable. Must have or be able to acquire a CDL license with air brakes and tanker endorsement within (6) six months of employment.
Hourly Pay: $26.53-$31.85 DOQ.
